After more than a decade of marriage, I’ve gathered some insights that I’m excited to share today.
If you’re familiar with this space, you’ll know that autumn holds a special place in my heart. The changing leaves, cooler weather, and the celebration of anniversaries make this season truly magical.
Not only do I cherish this time of year, but I also enjoy reflecting on marriage as my anniversary approaches.
This year is particularly significant as we mark our eleventh year together. Reflecting on the past decade, it’s amazing to realize how much we’ve experienced and overcome as a couple: challenges at work, personal losses, health issues, family dynamics, and unexpected events.
While the list of hardships may seem daunting, it’s a reminder of our resilience and commitment to each other through thick and thin.
As we look back on eleven years of marriage, we’ve learned valuable lessons that have strengthened our relationship. Communication, trust, and mutual respect are key ingredients for a successful marriage. We’ve learned to listen actively to each other, to be honest and open in our communication, and to always prioritize our relationship.
Another important lesson we’ve learned is the importance of effort and compromise. Marriage is a partnership, and it requires effort from both partners to make it work. We’ve learned to compromise, to put each other’s needs before our own, and to always strive to make each other happy.
Through the ups and downs of life, we’ve also learned the importance of patience and forgiveness. No marriage is perfect, and there will be times when we make mistakes or hurt each other. But through patience and forgiveness, we’ve been able to overcome these challenges and grow stronger as a couple.
As we celebrate our eleventh anniversary this fall, we’re grateful for all the lessons we’ve learned and all the growth we’ve experienced together. Here’s to many more years of love, laughter, and togetherness.
The Passage of Time
Embracing the Present
Time seems to slip away faster with each passing year, urging us to make the most of every moment we have together.
Letting Go of Fear
One lesson I’ve learned is to release any anxiety about the unknown future, especially the fear of losing my partner. True love does not dwell in fear but in faith and trust.
Embracing Change in All Seasons
While autumn holds a special place in my heart, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty and significance of all seasons in marriage. Each stage, from the honeymoon phase to retirement, brings its own joys and challenges.
Valuing Diverse Perspectives
Marriage advice is abundant, but not all guidance fits every relationship. It’s essential to discern what works for us as a couple and embrace unconventional approaches if they strengthen our bond.
Nurturing Individual Growth
While unity in marriage is vital, embracing our individuality and personal growth enhances the strength of our partnership. We thrive as a couple when we support each other’s unique journeys.
Celebrating Differences
Agreements in marriage are essential, but so are differences. Our distinct personalities and viewpoints enrich our relationship, allowing us to explore new perspectives and experiences.
Effective Communication

Communication in marriage can be both effortless and challenging. Some days, we seem to understand each other without words, while on others, miscommunication leads to frustration. Laughing through these moments and acknowledging our efforts to connect is key.
Recognizing Unity within Individuality
In our marriage, we are two independent souls who come together to form a harmonious entity. Honoring our individual identities while nurturing our shared bond creates a strong foundation for our relationship.
Embracing Challenges Together
Despite misunderstandings or disagreements, every experience in marriage offers an opportunity for growth and learning. Approaching challenges with humor and resilience strengthens our bond.

Understanding Child Marriage
Child marriage, defined as a union where one or both partners are under 18 years old, presents complex challenges that impact the lives of young girls and boys worldwide.
While the concept of child marriage may vary across cultures, its effects are particularly pronounced among adolescent girls, who face heightened risks and vulnerabilities.
Whether formal or informal, legal or customary, child marriage remains a prevalent issue that infringes upon the human rights and well-being of minors.
Addressing child marriage requires a comprehensive approach that prioritizes gender equality, education, and social protection for vulnerable children.
The Global Impact of Child Marriage
Despite efforts to reduce child marriage rates globally, millions of young girls and boys continue to be affected by this harmful practice, with disparities persisting across regions and communities.
From South Asia to sub-Saharan Africa to high-income countries, child marriage remains a pressing issue that demands urgent intervention and support for at-risk children.
Challenging Harmful Practices
To combat child marriage effectively, policies and programs must address the root causes of this phenomenon, including gender inequality, poverty, and social norms that perpetuate early unions.
Empowering young people with educational and economic opportunities, along with enforcing laws that protect their rights, is crucial in ending child marriage and promoting a future of equality and dignity for all.
Advocating for Change
Every individual has a role to play in eradicating child marriage and upholding the rights of young boys and girls. By raising awareness, supporting community initiatives, and advocating for policy reforms, we can create a world where every child has the chance to thrive and fulfill their potential.
Standing Against Child Marriage
Child marriage is a violation of basic human rights that robs children of their childhood, education, and future opportunities. It is our collective responsibility to end this harmful practice and ensure a safe and empowering environment for all young individuals.
Promoting Gender Equality and Justice
By promoting gender equality, empowering young girls and boys, and advocating for laws that protect children’s rights, we can create a more just and inclusive society where every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Child marriage is not a traditional or religious practice, but rather a violation of human rights recognized by governments worldwide. Communities require options beyond child marriage, such as education, job opportunities, and social support.
To prevent child marriage, gender equality must progress, empowering young people to make choices about their sexuality and granting them access to education, healthcare, and economic prospects. Adolescents can contribute to ending child marriage through empowerment, education, and advocacy, supported by organizations like UNFPA.
Estimates indicate that ending child marriage in 68 countries by 2030 will cost $35 billion but will bring substantial benefits by preventing millions of child marriages. Terms like “child, early, and forced marriage” are interconnected, indicating the necessity of addressing these issues comprehensively.
Adolescent pregnancy is both a cause and consequence of child marriage, with most adolescent births occurring among married girls aged 15-19. Child marriage frequently leads to early pregnancies, endangering girls’ health. Pregnancy and childbirth complications are a leading cause of death among adolescent girls worldwide.
Globally, child marriage and teenage pregnancy have a significant negative impact on young girls. UNFPA is addressing the underlying causes by collaborating with various groups, including adolescent girls, to tackle economic and gender inequality, societal taboos around adolescent sexuality, and limited access to health services. Support is also extended to married and unionized girls, particularly regarding sexual and reproductive health services and response to gender-based violence.
